Surface Softening

Surface softening treatment on textured porcelain

Smooth, Clean, Comfortable

Textured porcelain stoneware and structured natural stone are popular choices for hotel bathrooms, spa areas, pool decks and outdoor terraces because of their inherent slip resistance. However, their rough surface texture creates a significant maintenance challenge: dirt, grime, soap residue and mineral deposits become trapped in the micro-grooves and ridges of the surface, making thorough cleaning extremely difficult with standard mopping.

GFS surface softening treatment addresses this problem by selectively reducing the peak roughness of the texture while preserving its overall profile. We use calibrated diamond abrasive tools to gently round off the sharpest peaks on the surface, creating a smoother feel underfoot without eliminating the texture entirely. The result is a floor that retains its anti-slip properties (verified by pendulum testing) but is dramatically easier to clean and more comfortable to walk on barefoot.

The treatment is particularly valuable for textured porcelain tiles with a Ra (arithmetic mean roughness) value above 10 µm, where cleaning difficulty is most pronounced. After treatment, Ra values typically decrease by 30–50%, bringing the surface into a range that balances slip resistance with cleanability. We verify both metrics (COF and Ra) before and after treatment to ensure optimal results.

Surface softening is also beneficial for structured natural stone such as bush-hammered granite, flamed travertine and sandblasted limestone. These finishes, while architecturally attractive, can be abrasive on bare feet and difficult to maintain. Our treatment smooths the harshest peaks while preserving the characteristic texture of the stone.

The process is completed in a single session using floor-mounted grinding machines equipped with flexible diamond pads. No chemicals are used—the treatment is purely mechanical. The floor is ready for use immediately after treatment with no curing or drying time required.

Key Benefits

Easier Cleaning

Dirt and grime no longer become trapped in surface micro-grooves, reducing cleaning time by up to 50%.

Retained Grip

Anti-slip properties are preserved—verified by pendulum testing before and after treatment.

Barefoot Comfort

Ideal for spa, pool and bathroom areas where guests walk barefoot on previously abrasive surfaces.

Chemical-Free

Purely mechanical process using diamond abrasives—no chemicals, no fumes, no residues.

Reduced Maintenance Costs

Lower cleaning frequency and reduced chemical consumption translate to ongoing operational savings.

Immediate Use

No curing or drying time. The floor is ready for foot traffic immediately after treatment.

Materials Treated

Textured Porcelain

Structured, grip and R10–R13 rated porcelain stoneware tiles with rough anti-slip surfaces.

Bush-Hammered Stone

Granite, basalt and other stones with bush-hammered finish used in outdoor and wet areas.

Flamed Stone

Flamed granite and travertine with rough, thermally-treated surfaces.

Sandblasted Stone

Sandblasted limestone, marble and other natural stones with abrasive textures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the floor become slippery after softening?

No. We carefully control the degree of softening to ensure the floor retains adequate slip resistance. We perform pendulum testing (BS 7976) before and after treatment and provide a certificate confirming the floor meets safety requirements.

How much smoother will the surface feel?

The surface roughness (Ra value) is typically reduced by 30–50%. The texture is still clearly visible and tactile, but the sharpest peaks are rounded, making it noticeably more comfortable underfoot and significantly easier to clean.

Will the appearance of the tile change?

The overall appearance is preserved. There may be a very slight change in the surface sheen (the texture becomes marginally less matte), but the colour, pattern and general character of the tile remain unchanged.

Is this treatment suitable for outdoor areas?

Yes. We regularly treat pool surrounds, terraces and outdoor walkways. For exterior applications, we calibrate the softening level conservatively to ensure adequate wet slip resistance is maintained in all weather conditions.
