Understanding Engobe

Engobe (also called “engobbio” in Italian) is a thin layer of liquid ceramic slip applied to the back and sometimes the surface of porcelain stoneware tiles during manufacturing. It serves multiple purposes in production: it prevents tiles from sticking to kiln rollers during firing, acts as a base layer for digital printing on decorated tiles, and helps regulate thermal behaviour during the firing process.

In an ideal production process, the engobe layer is fully vitrified and integrated into the tile body during firing. However, in practice, a thin residual film of engobe frequently remains on the tile surface after production. This residual layer may not be visible when tiles are inspected individually, but once installed and subjected to foot traffic, it creates several problems: the surface appears cloudy or milky, it attracts and holds dirt that resists normal cleaning, the colour appears duller than expected, and the tile’s intended anti-slip properties may be compromised.

GFS engobe removal uses a combination of alkaline chemical solutions and controlled mechanical abrasion to dissolve and strip the residual engobe film from the tile surface. The treatment is calibrated to the specific tile type—structured, smooth, polished or lapped—to ensure complete removal without altering the underlying tile finish. We use floor-mounted scrubbing machines with diamond or abrasive pads, combined with our proprietary alkaline detergent that breaks down the silica-based engobe layer.

After engobe removal, the tile surface reveals its true colour, texture and design as intended by the manufacturer. Cleaning becomes dramatically easier because dirt can no longer embed in the engobe film. The tile’s specified slip resistance (R-value) is restored, which is critical for regulatory compliance in commercial and hospitality environments.
